It's Hard to Be Legit & Still Pay the Rent

My alma mater began its donation drive today.
I am currently cowering in fear in a cave on an uninhabited island,
far from any technology by which they could reach me.
In all honesty, I might give.
Not that I have much moolah to donate.
If they would just hold off for a few years,
I will have stacks on stacks all for UD, provided they name a building after me,
or whatever.
Right now, two years out and three jobs later --
I'm poor.

If anything, I need to have a donation drive for myself:

« Rent »
Cost of living in Houston is killing me, ironically.
I thought moving away from D-Bag Dallas could only help a sista out,
but H-Town is even more expensive
and you get the bonus of an awful crime rate. Fab!
FAFSA needs to send a young, hot millionaire my way STAT.
(Isn't that where they get their money supply?)

« Law School »
Oh, yeah, that
I may not be paying tuition,
but those books are no joke.
No one wants to read that badly.

« Coffee/Cocaine »
See above, law school

« Shoes »
Lady Justice (that's what I'm calling myself now) needs to look good
How am I supposed to prove myself as an intelligent law student
without a cute wardrobe?

« Puppies »
Obviously.

Dobby is a Free Elf

Okay, so…

They announced during a meeting that I would be training for a new (harder) position,
but never confirmed it with me first.
In fact, we've spoken about this before
and I said no to changing jobs
(a bold move, I'm aware, but I really don't want this position).
Apparently, my desires are no longer valid.
They just decided to move me
and didn't say anything about a pay raise or whatnot.
Also, a coworker accidentally laughed when I told her how much they pay me.
Also, six people quit or were fired last week.
Also, I would be leaving soon anyway
because I'm moving home before law school.
Also, I've been trying to quit for months now.
Also, this job is the worst.
So I'm out.

Being completely unable to make decisions by myself,
this has had me absolutely stressed.

I wrote this post
and then called my mom for the 5th time today (literally)
to ask if we were completely sure.
She didn't answer (do you think she's getting annoyed?),
so I'm making a unilateral decision,
which is making my eye twitch and my stomach cramp.

But I am relieved.
How relieved, you ask?
This relieved:

I could go on, but I think you get it.

And I'm in a much better headspace than I was for the last period of unemployment.
This one ends in law school and a path to money & security.
Last time, there was no path.
Only a scary forest of hopelessness and job applications
ending with the cliffs of despair.

So while I didn't make it to the end of Lent, as was my intention,
I survived 10 months.
Is there a support group I can join?

Post-Grad Lyfe, A to Zed, Pt. II

The continuation...

Networking
     Is there anything worse?
Making "connections" with people you don't care about or want to ever see again
in the hopes that they might get you a better job than the one you have.
The only good thing is the (sometimes) open bar.

Obamacare
My life ends when I turn 25.
At that point, I will be kicked off my parents' insurance
and left to fend for myself in the seething vat of waste that is Obamacare.
My only chance is getting super fat & developing weight-related diabetes,
because that will probably be completely paid for by the good ole taxpayer.

Pyramid schemes
I have a terrible job and I make almost nothing doing it.
In every post-grad's life, there comes a time when you search for something to do
"on the side" to make a little extra money.
     Enter the pyramid scheme.
I was almost the victim of one a couple weeks ago.
I'm looking at you, J Hilburn.

Quarter life crisis
     I'm having the quarter-life-minus-two crisis.
At this point, I see myself firmly entrenched in this funk for the next two years.

Retirement
All we have to look forward to,
but we'll be too old, tired, feeble, & broke (the way this economy is going)
     to actually enjoy it.

Sick days
In college, if I woke up and didn't feel like going to class, I didn't.
     There wasn't any forethought.
     But no more of that.
     Sick days have to be carefully planned;
in fact, if Murphy's Law is to be believed,
as soon as you use those sick days on spontaneous travels and lazy days,
you'll come down with the worst flu to ever hit humankind.
     God bless you.

Take-out
     I've gotten better. I promise.
And really I wasn't nearly as bad as I could have been.
But those first couple of months of my first real life job,
Pei Wei saw a lot of me.
The fact that I was teaching didn't really help anything
because those little hellions sucked all of my energy like it was their duty to der Vaterland.
Quick & easy was preferable, and I'm not talking about my meals. HEY-O!
Just kidding, I'm totally talking about food.

Unemployment/Underemployment
I'm quite adept at unemployment. See every blog post prior to August
My new area of expertise is underemployment.
Outside of the attorneys, I'm the only person in the office with a college degree.
One girl tried to tell me that she has a degree in sign language,
and that's when I pretended to go deaf.

My other choice for this letter is Unsolicited career advice.
Prepare yourself for smug jerks telling you how to live your life
when all you wanted was to know if they were going to use the outlet at Starbucks.

Validation, or lack thereof
I have never felt so poorly about myself than when begging for a retail job...
     ...that I didn't get.

Weekends
Dry cleaning, groceries, laundry, miscellaneous errands.
Weekends are now planned out, because when else do I have time to get my oil changed?
Spontaneous drinking in Old Mill, you are sorely missed.

Xanax
That quarter life crisis might beget the need for little happy pills.
This blog would get seriously boring if that should ever come to fruition.

Yearning
Good Lord, what do you not yearn for post-grad?
Stability, a job, a career, more time, less stress, friends, happiness...

Zero
     I've accepted it: I'm a zero.

Life, man.

Sorry for the awkward spacing.
I don't really understand technology or CSS or HTML or what-have-you.
Apologies.

To make us all feel better:

Remix to Recession

I'm pretty tired of "adults" complaining about my generation, especially in reference to our work ethic/expectations.
I saw this article, and a response immediately started forming.
(This one's quite wordy, so feel free to bouncebouncebounce now.) <---Get the joke?! Love me some Remix.
Say hi to Bobby.
Bobby is part of the Baby Boomer generation,
the generation born between 1943 and 1964.
He's also part of a hippie culture that makes up a large portion of Baby Boomers.

I have a term for hippies in the Baby Boomer age group--
I call them Persons Addicted To "Happiness" at the Expense of TheIr Country,
or PATHETICs.
A PATHETIC is a unique brand of hippie, one who is completely oblivious to the destruction they've cause over their lifetime.
So Bobby's enjoying his PATHETIC life, and he's very pleased to be Bobby. Only issue is one thing:

Bobby's caused the downfall of America.

To get to the bottom of why, we need to define what makes someone cause the downfall of America in the first place. It comes down to a simple formula:

DOWNFALL = (IRRESPONSIBILITY + LAZINESS)TIME

It's pretty straightforward--Bobby's generation took advantage
of a strong economy, got complacent + irresponsible with money,
and just kept putting off having to face the sweet, debt-owing music.

To provide some context, let's start by bringing Bobby's parents into the discussion:
They might not say that. But they're thinking it.

Bobby's parents were born in the G.I. Generation, or the "Greatest Generation,"
who grew up during the Great Depression,
fought in World War II, and were most definitely not PATHETIC.
Good ole Mom & Pop.

Bobby's Depression Era parents were obsessed with economic security
and raised Bobby to envision a successful and stable career for himself.
He was taught that there was nothing stopping him
from getting to the Promised Land of employment,
but that he'd need to put in years of hard work to make it happen.

Instead, Bobby's generation became complacent & entitled.
After graduating college--
college that was remarkably easy to get into as well as pay for--
as an insufferable hippie, Bobby embarked on his career.
As time rolled along, the world entered a time of unprecedented economic prosperity.
Bobby did even better than he expected to.
Instead of feeling grateful, this left him feeling self-satisfied and arrogant.
Having draft-dodged Vietnam and with a head cloudy from the White Album and kush,
(my timeline is iffy--let it go)
Bobby wanted less work, longer vacations, and a good life--now.
So Bobby loaded upon debt. (We'll come back to that later.)

And then Bobby had children.
Terrified of getting older and having acid flashbacks with each visit to the chiropractor,
Bobby raised his children to be special unicorn fairies with limitless possibilities.
And he wasn't alone.
"Baby Boomers all around the country and the world told their Gen Y kids
that they could be whatever they wanted to be.
This left [the Gen Y kids] feeling tremendously hopeful about their careers, to the point
where their parents' goals of a green lawn of secure prosperity
didn't really do it for them. A [Gen Y]-worthy lawn has flowers."
(Sidenote: Don't most parents want their kids to hope for more than what they were given?)

But Bobby got older, despite his debilitating fear of aging.
And that debt from his youth? Yeah, it caught up to him.
And instead of facing up to his mistakes, Bobby did what Bobby does best--
made it worse and then cried until someone else came along to fix it.

Yes, Gen Y-ers are "wildly ambitious."
Yes, Gen Y-ers are "delusional."

But only because the vast majority of Gen Y-ers were raised by PATHETIC Baby Boomers.
And those of us who managed to be born of God-and-Reagan-fearing folk
still inherited an economy that had been raped & pillaged by aging hippies.

When it comes to talking about how sucky my generation is,
I will race anyone to the soapbox and roundhouse-to-the-face young & old alike
for the chance at the megaphone.
I've moved on from despair to acceptance that my generation
will probably bring about the end of civilization.
But it is offensive & outright wrong to lay the blame solely on us.
Unless we are a generation of feral children, someone was there
telling us we were special and exceptional and
to reach-for-the-moon-because-even-if-we-miss-we'll-land-amongst-the-stars.
And unless I'm mistaken, that's a pretty hippy, Baby Boomer, parent thing to say.

And as special & exceptional as I am, even I couldn't make that shit up.

I probably plagiarized a lot, and these are not all my own ideas, and none of the pictures are mine (I just altered them). So don't sue me or anything.

If I Could Plan My Own Birthday (+ Magic Was Real...)

I'm at that stage of unemployment
where I'm pretty ready to just Walden out.
Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air & all that.

I went through a pretty sweet Walden phase my last couple of years of high school.
My mom refers to it as my "hippie" phase,
but that sounds philosophically & fashionably tragic.

It was a little tragic.
(Photos from junior & senior year, respectively.)

There are no jobs to be had,
so I might as well finally realize my high school dream:
to live in a school bus in the wilderness, hunt & forage for my food,
and listen to the Dead all day.
(Replace the Dead with Pearl Jam and my dream is Into the Wild. I understand that.
Please don't make fun of 18-year-old me.)

Anywhoodle, my birthday is on Saturday.
Here's what I would do if I could plan my own birthday + magic was real:
(22 going on 8, y'all)

Wake up: breakfast with the Disney princesses

This is a real thing.
I did it at Disney World for my friend's 18th birthday.
However, I would like to do it with the actual princesses,
not actors.

We also got princess makeovers. DO NOT DO THIS.
That amount of gel + that amount of eye shadow does not belong on a white girl.
Plus, 18-year-old me had terrible taste in earrings. GIANT HEARTS WHAT WHAT.

9:30-10:00 Pet a unicorn

Unicorns are wild creatures, so keeping it isn't an option,
but petting it is.

10:00-2:00 Go to Harry Potter-land (aka The Wizarding World of Harry Potter)

Being completely honest,
I sometimes spend long periods of time thinking about how great this place must be.
I have a passionate love for Disney World and didn't think it could get better.
And then the geniuses at Disney added Harry Potter.
Fair warning: I will probably tear up if I ever make it there.

And while I was at Harry Potter-land, I would receive my owl!
Yes, I would be the oldest student at Hogwarts but whatevaaa.

2:00-2:01 Spend time with Doctor Who

I would only need a minute, because it's time travel.
Duh.
I COULD GO ANYWHERE & ANY TIME.
#imonlyalittleembarrassed

2:01-5:00 Shopping spree

I will not be limiting myself to one location.
I would like a worldwide shopping spree.
Fifth Avenue,Via Montenapoleone,
Bahnhofstrasse, Avenue Montaigne, back to La Cantera.
Dream big.

Cue great "shopping" movie montage:

5:00-6:00 Play with a truckload of puppies

6:00-9:00 Classic movie-watching party at Hollywood Blvd Cinema with EVERYONE

This movie theatre is beautiful.
I would live there if I could.
Every theatre is themed & decorated to perfection.
The restrooms are not Men/Women; they are "Norman's" & "Mother's". I die

This is Coconut Grove & it is decorated like the streets of Casablanca. Guess what movie would be playing?

9:00-??? Party it up in Vegas with my favorite people

It would start early because there's no time to be wasted with pre-gaming nonsense.
Everyone would go immediately from the movies to Vegas,
& would be automatically dressed to the nines.
All of my friends from every stage of life would be there + all of my favorite bands would play
and then wander around talking to everyone, & it would be Gatsby-style.
Not 40s-themed, but FABULOUS-themed.
Brian Litrell having a conversation with my bestie from 5th grade while Alanis dances with Biggie (RIP) to Michael Buble while showgirls drop glitter from chandeliers?
Can't imagine better.

???-A.M. Spend the night in the Cinderella Suite

I would begin & end in Disney.
Just as it should be.

I have set my goals high. We'll see how it goes.

The Blog About Nothing

In all of my interviews, I get this dreaded question:

What have you been doing since your last job?

My reaction:
This is my favorite face of all faces, so this image will be used often.

Luckily, "preparing for the LSAT" sounds good & is actually true.
Obviously, I should be volunteering or taking classes or whatever.
And I will be doing that soon, I promise.

But here's what I would say if I could be totally honest:

Re-watching Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Maybe it's because I'm older, but the way they never told us if Gary & Sam got together is really bothering me.

Watching the birds play on my porch (& pretending I'm Cinderella)
I have the laziest, least helpful bird friends ever.

Starting a blog
Ugh.

Here's a bunch of random Internet finds:

This story about a soldier & his dog-love from Afghanistan:
I would marry him so fast.

Maybe it's because I'm accidentally tipsy (on this wine)
but videos of soldiers reuniting with their dogs make me cry
(note: it's not because of the wine; I do this every month or so).
There's actually a website that scratches that itch for me.
You're welcome & keep the tissues handy.

This is what Lisa Frank looks like:

I didn't really have any picture in my head,
yet she is exactly what I would have imagined.
I also had to look for a weirdly long amount of time before I could find a picture of her.
It's not like she's the shy, retiring type:

She was so super high when she drew this.

I feel like every interview I have goes like this:

On the subject of New Girl:
"My life sucks so much right now, but at least I'm not 23."
SHUT UP, JESSICA DAY.

This Facebook ad:

You want me to buy your wine?
Don't ever ever ever liken me to the 99%.
That shit cray.

Apparently, there's a heat wave in the Northeast right now:

MAN UP.
Those temperatures + humidity look like Texas in September.
Stop complaining & grab a snow cone.

Also, my sister blogs.
It's a mommy blog, so I don't really have much interaction with it.
BUT
she also crafts & is going to be a contributor at mycraftyspot.com!
So that's neat.
Here's her blog.

My birthday's on Saturday.
I might post again before then.
Maybe.
